What You Need to Know About Tooth Decay

If you have a toothache, your tooth is sensitive to the touch or temperature, or feels rough when you run your tongue alongside it, you may have tooth decay. You should make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

Fillings are often used to restore damaged teeth. When a dentist places a filling, the decay is removed, and the affected area is cleaned and filled with material.  To fill the cavity, the dentist will typically use a composite resin that matches the color of your tooth and provides a natural look.

Composites aren’t ideal for large fillings because they are susceptible to chipping; in that instance, crowns become a treatment option.  Also, if the decay reaches the nerve, it may need to be treated with root canal therapy or pulp capping.
